Press release Heatherwood Hospital
Sunninghill and Ascot Parish Council has decided to campaign in support of the retention of services for local people at Heatherwood Hospital. There has been a steady decline of services available at the hospital, some based on sound clinical reasons and others that have been moved for the convenience of the Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospital Trust and not the patients that they serve.
The Parish Council agreed that the future of Heatherwood is the most significant issue that the local community faces and that, despite the fact that it is not a campaigning organisation it will, on this very important issue, take a lead.
Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospital Trust will be consulting on three options for the future of acute care in east Berkshire and at this time only one option includes the retention of Heatherwood.
The Leader of Sunninghill and Ascot Parish Council, Jeff Yong said, “The Right Care Right Place consultation, run two years ago, talked about local health services for local people. The Parish Council supported this concept and see Heatherwood Hospital as an important local facility. However, despite assurances from the Primary Care Trust and the Hospital Trust, it seems that not a year goes by without another threat to the future of the Hospital. It is intolerable to local people and the dedicated staff at the Hospital to allow this continuing uncertainty.”
Jeff Yong went on to say, “The Parish Council urges Heatherwood & Wexham Park Hospital Trust and NHS Berkshire to choose an option for acute service in East Berkshire that includes Heatherwood Hospital.”

Parish Council response to the Draft NPPF
Dear Mr Scott,
Sunninghill & Ascot Parish Council have discussed the draft framework and wish to register concern on a number of issues which are listed below.
The presumption in favour of development, which will lead to unacceptable and inappropriate schemes being brought forward with the possible support of the Planning Inspectorate, regardless of damage to the amenity of residents and the wider community. The presumption that all development is good and without the current safeguards in place, will inevitably lead to inappropriate development
‘Sustainability,’ mentioned frequently is not defined and is therefore open to interpretation. If this is not corrected the only people to benefit will be barristers and lawyers working on behalf of developers
The majority of available land in our parish is from windfall sites, which cannot be included in the rolling supply of specific developable sites. This threatens the significant area of Greenbelt in our parish and we are concerned that wording has been changed from the current policy which states that’ all development in the greenbelt is inappropriate with some exceptions’ to ‘inappropriate development, is by definition, harmful to the Greenbelt and should not be approved’ This ambiguous statement weakens the protection of the Greenbelt and planning consultants and lawyers will seek to exploit this ambiguity.
“Communities” have little control or influence on local development and will be unable to deliver a wide choice of high quality homes in the right location to meet local demand as they do not own the land. Developers will continue to build properties which give the highest profit for their shareholders (to whom they are accountable) without any government intervention. Local demand has not and is unlikely ever to be a consideration for developers.
Importantly, there should be no reduction in developer contribution, which is carefully calculated to mitigate the impact of new development. To suggest reductions to facilitate building will lead to developers challenging their contribution and should the Planning Inspectorate support a reduction, they would be in effect supporting unsustainable development.
The statement that developments will not be refused because of lack of transport is extremely worrying. Contrary to perception, transport links in this area are poor. Car use causes major congestion and increased air pollution on roads and in villages. This legislation will seriously undermine the quality of life for residents and exacerbate an already difficult situation.
Finally, we ask the government to re think this policy, which has been simplified to the extent of being ambiguous and in favour of development at any cost. We look forward to a revision that includes rigorous policies to protect our green belt and provides a proper balance between the ambitions of developers and the needs and wishes of our communities
On behalf of the parish council
Yours sincerely
Cllr. J Yong
Chairman
Fitness for all – Calling all Adults
Sunninghill's Victory Field now boasts fitness equipment to provide local residents with an opportunity to exercise in the fresh air. The equipment was funded by the Borough following a bid from Sunninghill and Ascot Parish Council.
Parish Councillor Robert Ellison said “We’ve always had a range of equipment for children and teenagers but wanted to provide something that was also suitable for adults. This new equipment means we have a real variety of activity on offer within the Parish.”
With apparatus including leg stretch, mini ski, health walker, ski stepper and power push, there really is something for everyone.

Parish Shield Victory For Athletico Ascot
The annual Sunninghill and Ascot Parish Shield kicked off the football season for local teams on Sunday with a competitive final at Victory Fields. Rounding off a tournament between the Parish’s senior teams, Athletico Ascot held North Ascot FC to a 6–3 victory.
While North Ascot started strongly on their home ground with a goal from Simon Cooke within the first ten minutes, Athletico’s Tayler Mitchinson was quick to equalise three minutes later. By the end of the first half, a second goal from Tayler Mitchinson and another from Rob Usher had taken Athletico to a 3-1 lead. North Ascot fought back in the second half, with both Simon Knight and John Bennett scoring, but a hat trick from Athletico’s Dan Simmons sealed victory.
Both teams compete in the Camberley and District Sunday Football league although beating a team two leagues above them made success all the sweeter for fourth division Athletico.
Presenting the shield at the end of the match Parish Councillor Robert Ellison said “The Parish Council is proud to support local teams and the enthusiasm shown by both sides today bodes well for the rest of the season”

Inflatable fun in Sunninghill
Nearly 250 children took part in a week of free activities held in Victory Fields from 8th to 12th August. With an inflatable assault course, sumo suits, go karts, human table football and bungees, every day provided an opportunity to try something new.
A clear highlight was ‘human demolition’ where children took turns to knock each other off a podium with a demolition ball. With much hilarity, the event quickly turned into a team challenge to gain as much time as possible on the podium.
Even the rain failed to dampen spirits as members of Windsor & Maidenhead’s Youth Services team were on hand to help with crafts such as bracelets and necklaces.
The children, aged between 8 and 13, came from a range of local schools but jumped at the chance to make new friends. Some even met their future classmates as they prepare for their move to secondary school.
Parish Councillor Michelle Turton said “This is the sixth year that we have hosted the Parish Tour in Victory Fields and it is fantastic to see so many children enjoying themselves in some really exciting activities.”
